Use the right local hardness figure
LVVWD's 2026 summary reports average total hardness of 280 ppm, approximately 16.4 GPG. This covers its Las Vegas Valley service area. Henderson, North Las Vegas and separate well systems have their own source information.
Read the LVVWD summary. Check your utility and test untreated tap water before entering a softener setting.
Size by usable capacity and service flow
For an illustrative four-person household using 60 gallons per person per day at 16.4 GPG, seven days of use plus a one-day reserve require about 31,488 grains of usable capacity. Your measured hardness and water use may differ.
Ask how much capacity the model delivers at an efficient salt dose. Separately, check whether its service flow supports showers and other fixtures used together. A grain rating does not answer that question.
Calculate your household requirementsSalt-based softener or conditioner?
An ion-exchange softener removes calcium and magnesium from the water. A salt-free conditioner is a different type of treatment; it does not make a total-hardness test read like softened water. Choose based on the result you want and the manufacturer's independently supported performance claims.
Conventional shower filters and carbon filters should not be treated as substitutes for hardness removal. Keep outdoor irrigation needs separate when planning whole-house plumbing.
